Honolulu County accounted for the lion's share of asbestos-related deaths in Hawaii for the period 1979 to 1999. Mesothelioma, caused only by asbestos exposure, is a deadly cancer. Asbestosis is scarring of the lungs attributed to breathing asbestos fibers.
The EWG Action Fund prepared the Hawaii data. Honolulu County reported 114 deaths, Hawaii County reported 12, and Kauai and Maui counties each reported six deaths.
The EWG site lists a range of deaths while this site is only reporting the lower figure.
