Although the companies continue to fight the claims of the workers, saying they are not sick and deserving of no compensation, the companies acknowledge internally that by the time Asbestosis is even diagnosable on x-ray, one-third of the lung is affected.

It is estimated that in order for the disease Asbestosis to be clinically diagnosed, the gas exchange function of at least 100 million alveolar capillary units [one-third of the lung], must be affected.

Once the gas exchange capacity of an individual alveolar capillary unit is compromised, the loss is permanent.

It is not until the disease is advanced that a diagnosis can even be made, argue the insurance industry members.

It is not until the disease is relatively advanced that a firm diagnosis of Asbestosis can be made.

Moreover, Asbestos causes genetic mutations.

Asbestos fibers may alter, or cause serious mutations, in the chromosomal structure of the cells of the pleura.

And very often the body's inflammatory reaction to Asbestos leads to cancer.

The first injury leading to the development of brocogenic carcinoma or mesothelioma is the inflammatory reaction and the onset of fibrosis, which occur at the time of initial exposure.
