Cerebral Palsy: United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Philadelphia and Vicinity

United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Philadelphia and Vicinity has been working for over 50 years to positively affect the quality of life for children and adults with cerebral palsy and similar disabilities in the five-county Philadelphia area.

Little was known about cerebral palsy in 1946 and little hope was offered to parents of children with CP except, perhaps to, find a good institution and get on with their lives. Love and courage prevailed, and six parents with both will and spirit reached out to everyone who would lend support to their cause--to change the destiny of children and adults with disabilities.

Today, thanks to the efforts of those six parents, more than 7,000 children and adults with cerebral palsy and other disabilities in the five-county Philadelphia area have access to services and programs to help them become independent and productive members of the community. These programs and services are geared to encourage persons with disabilities to reach their potential, challenge their limitations, and function with dignity.

These direct services include physical, speech, and occupational therapies; early intervention; community sports and recreation; community residential and respite care programs; vocational evaluation and training; job placement and support; group counseling; and daily adult activities. Additionally, close to 5,000 individuals and families receive information about services, living with disabilities, and resources for assistance, including referrals to helping organizations.

UCP has expanded its capabilities by providing programs and services to people with a wide variety of physical, mental, hearing and speech impairments including head trauma, Down Syndrome, spinal cord injuries, mental retardation, or any physical condition that severely limit an individual's independent functioning.
